About This Item
Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Jacket Condition: Good+. Sandlapper Pub Co, Lexington, SC 1977. First Edition. 1st Printing. 102 pages. Nice Firm Clean copy ! Jacket has edge wear, short tears. Size: 9 x 5.8 x 0.3. Condemned to death by British authorities during the occupation of Charlestown in 1781, Hayne became perhaps the most prominenl American to be executed during the American Revolution for treason against the Crown. Ambiguous and extenuating circumstances surrounding his conduct, the importance of his example, and his courage in facing death immediately made his case controversial and his name famous. The American commander in the South, General Nathanael Greene threatened retaliation; after the victory at Yorktown, the Continental Congress considered a motion to take vengeance on their most important prisoner, Lord Cornwallis; while the debate over the Hayne affair in the British House of Lords almost led to a duel between an outraged Duke of Richmond and one of the men responsible for the execution.
