About This Item

London England: Longmans, Green and Co. Hardback. Tiny tear to top edge of front of D/J. The Exilic Age, the time of Israel's captivity in Babylon after the Hebrew kingdoms had been ravaged and the holy places sacked, was in the Sixth Century B.C. This was the century during which Babylon and Egypt, the Empires which had traditionally been the threat to Israel, were themselves declining from their days of glory, as the power of hellenic ideas and Roman arms spread across the Eastern Mediterranean. The author shows that the significance of this new insight (almost a new dimension) in the prophets can be grasped only if they are seen, as they were, surrounded by a battleground of ideas and religions in an age of ferment; the achievement of the Exilic prophets is not belittled, but better understood, when the legacy of Israel and the infiltration of ideas from neighbouring nations, not least from Babylon itself, are clearly distinguished. Dr. Whitley combines readability with a scholarship which is supported by deep historical knowledge and a wise, accurage use of source-material. 160 pp. ( We carry a wide selection of titles in sci fi fantasy and horror, The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) . Fine. Cloth. First Edition. 1957.
