He was seventeen when he crossed the Lassen Cutoff and begin mining at Rich Bar outside of Marysville. He provides descriptions of Marysville in 1850 and 51 and the Grass Valley/Nevada City area up to 1852. The book was written from memory, but provides engaging recollections of gold rush life and mining techniques in California and Australia.
