Very Good. 8vo [9x6.5in]; xviii, [1], 9-507 pp. [irregular pagination], frontispiece illustrations of California scenes, two portraits of author, 27 illustrations; Dark brown cloth covers with gilt lettering on front and spine with stamped black inked floral design at top and bottom, all edges trimmed, light green floral patterned end papers; Some shelf wear and rubbing to edges and covers, front hinge cracked and weak, shallow dent across spine, bottom corners bumped, spine lightly sunned. [Kurutz 235a, Cowan II p.206, Graff 1305]. From Kurutz, "Gudde states: "A highly interesting account, mainly of 1850." Ferguson left Cleveland for California in September 1849 by the overland route. He was seventeen when he crossed the Lassen Cutoff and begin mining at Rich Bar outside of Marysville. He provides descriptions of Marysville in 1850 and 51 and the Grass Valley/Nevada City area up to 1852. He then left for the Australia Gold Rush, stayed for 30 years, and returned to San Francisco in 1883. The book was written from memory, but provides engaging recollections of gold rush life and mining techniques in California and Australia.
