About This Item

Pittsburgh PA: Privately printed, 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 6 X 9 inches. 390 pages. Green cloth with bevelled edges. With the original blueprint map of the route at rear. Tipped-in on rear endpaper is is a mimeographed typed transcription of a letter from Johnston to Col. Thomas B. Kennedy dated Nov. 6, 1904. In it he recounts the several episodes in the book where they had encountered each other in California, at the end of the letter he says he printed 217 copies to give to friends and that this copy to Kennedy would be one of his last. Tipped into the rear pastedown is another typed transcription of a letter dated May 15 '49, from W.T. Kennedy to E. Wilkins Davidson Philadelphia, it recounts his journey from Missouri to California as he set out to catch up with Joseph and Thomas Kennedy (presumed relatives) and ends as the finally meet up in California. The book was kept in the family- it has the bookplate of Moorhead C. Kenndy III on front pastedown. He is the great grandson of Thomas Benton Kennedy (also American diplomat among the hostages at Tehran US Embassy) . Condition of the book is Good; mild wear to spine ends, ffep, frontis and title page missing, both hinges are cracked, but muslin still holding, 4 passages mentioning Kennedy have pencil lines, rfep with Johnston letter and map attached is detached. Somehow whoever transcribed Johnston's handwritten letter to type managed to misspell his name as "Wm. G. Johnson" at the begining and end of the letter. RRGR
