About This Item

London, John Murray, 1901.. 12th thousand, 1901, edited by Francis Darwin. 8vo, 195 x 125 mm, 7¾ x 5 inches, 7 Heliotype photographic plates with tissue guards, each with several images, plus 21 other illustrations in the text, viii pages of prelims, 394 pages including index, original publisher's dark green cloth, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, blind lines to covers, original brown endpapers. Slight wear to tips of corners, tiny fox spot to title page, otherwise a tight bright clean copy. Three of the photographic plates in the first and second issues of 1872 were folding, there are no folding plates in this edition, there are the same number of photographs, they have just been rearranged. This edition is a reset reissue of the second edition of 1890 edited by Darwin's son Francis Darwin. Francis added notes accumulated by Darwin on the subject which he had been unable to use because the first edition was not exhausted in his lifetime. Francis also adds his own footnotes in brackets. See Freeman, The Works of Charles Darwin, page 143-144 and No. 1156. This work is 'an important member of the evolutionary set, and it was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment'. The photographs are by Victorian photographer Oscar Gustave Rejlander (see Helmut Gernsheim, The History of Photography, page 247). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Synopsis

The most popular of Darwin's books during his lifetime, in a beautifully illustrated new edition Featuring dozens of color photographs from Darwin's original publication, this edition-issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth-makes this classic study newly accessible to modern readers. Published in 1872, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was a book at the very heart of Darwin's research interests. Darwin's main goal was to demonstrate the power of his theories for explaining the origin of our most cherished human qualities, morality and intellect. The work engages some of the hardest questions in the evolution debate, and it shows the ever-cautious Darwin at his boldest.
