About This Item

London; Boston: Faber & Faber. Good in Fair jacket Very Good in Fair jacket 25 cm. Condidtion very good in blue cloth boards, gilded lettering on spine, DJ fair with chip out top spine, tear top right corner, tear top rear spine, clean tight copy. From School Library Journal: Grade 2 Up Included in this collection of 26 classic fairy tales are 9 of the best known Grimm tales, 3 tales by Charles Perrault, and 4 by Hans Christian Andersen, as well as tales from most other classic collections such as Asbjornsen and Moe, The Arabian Nights, and Joseph Jacobs. Most of the translations are new and effective. A thorough introduction discusses the sources used, the power the tales hold for children, and the reasons for the selection of such well-known tales. Wijngaard has painted detailed illustrations for 15 of the longer stories and provided sprightly frames for the beginning and ending of each story. With its good quality paper and rich illustration, the book is reminiscent of the collections published by Scribners and David McKay early in this century. This collection of classic fairy tales would be good for libraries that need to replace or supplement collections of classic stories and for librarians to recommend to those wishing to purchase a quality collection for a gift. Barbara Chatton, College of Education, University of Wyoming, Laramie Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. . Good. Hardcover. 1988.
