About This Item
Rotomagi [Rouen]: Lud le Boucher; Laurent, Dumesnil, 1775. Later printing. Leather bound. Very good minus. 461; 576pp. Octavo [21 cm] Brown leather with gilt tooled spines. The spines were professionally restored long ago, but have since sustained a bit of cracking along the joints. Red speckled edges. Text block of volume 2 cracked at the beginning; front pastedowns have a previous owner's bookplate; neat manuscript notations on the half titles; faint ink stamps on title pages; despite occasional light foxing, pages clean and bright. The text is in French and Latin. Jean de La Fontaine's first six books of fables were first published in 1668. Five more books followed in 1678-79. And a twelfth book was published in 1694. Fontaine's verse fables transformed traditional folktales into some of the most-loved poetic works in the French language.
