London: Chatto and Windus, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 9.25" x 7", xv, 275 pp, with 46 color plates and 16 sepia drawings (all by the author), folding map of China. Bound in original green cloth with lettering and decoration in gilt, top edge gilt. Spine is slightly slanted and spine cloth is lightly sunned, with tears at head and foot. Mild to moderate foxing on some pages, but generally clean and sound. Emily Georgiana Kemp (1860-1939) was a British adventurer, artist and writer who travelled in China, Korea, India, Central Asia and the Amazon. The focus of her books -- which included (among others) The Face of Manchuria, Korea and Russian Turkestan (1910), Wanderings in Chinese Turkestan (1914), and Chinese Mettle (1921) -- was the education and welfare of women.
