Blackie & Son 1883 First issue, of the 4th state of 1st edition.. Approx 7.5 x 5 inches. In BLUE cloth with embossed and printed design to front and spine in red, black and gilt colouring. In very good condition. Corners bumped, edges rubbed, ends of spine slightly nicked at ends. Slight lean. Inner hinges cracked between endpapers with a couple of marks to endpapers. Neat inscription to front endpaper, dated 1884. Pages very clean and tight with very little or no foxing. Else a clean and tight copy. 8 full-page, tinted ills. by G. Browne. 304 pp./ cat.32pp (dated 11/83, but stating: New Series for Season 1884. Advertising: "With Clive in India", and "By Sheer Pluck" without press statements). Although stated on title-pg: Second Edition, "it was not, in fact, a new edition at all, indeed the text was not even a new impression...It was in this state that the majority of sheets from the first printing of FACING DEATH reached readers' hands" (Newbolt 10.4).
