About This Item
Industrial Department of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, 1927. First edition. Quarto (9 x 12 inches). 26, [2] pp. including a plethora of photographic illustrations about commercial Los Angeles and two maps (one double page spread in the middle and a single page map On inner back cover. Publisher's illustrated and tinted self-wrappers. On the bottom is a continues parade of blue color workers and each cover bears a cartouche; the front being a world map and the rear being a (rather Bolshevik) image of a man at work. Excellent condition.Pleasure-seekers had been moving to Los Angeles in droves since the 1880s. This is an attempt by the Chamber of Commerce to entice more industry. It discusses L.A.s cheap and abundant water, power and fuel, the raw material in the immediate vicinity and the excellence of its harbors. It then goes on the describe the manufacturers currently doing ban-up business in LA: Food, leather products, textiles, clothing, metallic industries, furniture and woodworking, the automotive industry, oil, chemicals and , on the very last page, the film industry. And according to the Chamber of Commerce all of this lovely capitalism this was all made possible because L.A. is "The Home of Contented Labor" (meaning of course the pleasant weather and the "fair' wages; which is a ruse as L.A was one of the least Union-friendly cities in the country.
