First American from the Second London edition. 22 cm. vi, [2], 120, iv, [4], 216, 80pp. Period full flame calf, gilt stamped red morocco spine label and gilt rules. Ownership signature of [Israel] Balch dated August 29, 1823, on front endpaper. Balch's first name has been rubbed out leaving a hole in paper. An otherwise very good copy. Dr. Israel Balch (1788-1858) graduated from Dartmouth and moved to Amesbury, Massachusetts to study with Dr. French, and eventually established his own practice there. "He had the largest medical library in Amesbury or vicinity. He was a very successful practitioner of medicine and surgery.... Many young men sought his office for instruction in medicine and surgery, navigation and higher mathematics." [see: "Genealogy of the Balch Families in America," by Galusha Balch (Salem, MA: 1897), p. 424].

Boards rubbed and edgeworn, two x two inch triangular-shaped portion of calf missing from front board. Early ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Text tanned and foxed. Good. "First American from the second London edition." Effectively three books in one, the first is an examination of puerperal fever, a devastating infection that affected women within days of childbirth, and was a common cause of death in childbirth up to the 1930s. The second book focuses on scarlet fever, pulmonary consumption, and measles, three common but deadly illnesses of the time, as well as discussing the positive effects of sulphurus water in healing them. The final book examines copaiba (copaiva in the book) balsam, a medecine made from sap of the copaifera species of trees. Used to cure diseases such as bronchitis, hemarrhoids and UTIs, it was and is a popular all-natural medicine…
