New York: Neale Publishing Company. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1913. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt along the spine. Rubbing to the cloth, with a small stain to the rear board. The gilt on the spine is still legible. Dust soiling to the page edges. Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard intact. Binding sound, an unmarked copy. Born into slavery in Louisiana and freed under the Emancipation Proclamation, Lynch was the first African-American Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, and among the first generation of African Americans elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from 1873-1877 and again in the 1880s. Includes an account of an interview between Lynch and President Cleveland, as well as portraits of Black members of Congress. Krick 290. ; 325 pages .
