Early American edition; 8vo; pp. [8], 1-338, [6] publisher's advertisements; original red boards; gilt title to spine; several small spots and scratches to boards; spine slightly faded with minor wear to head and tail of spine; very faint marginal age-darkening to page edges. The stories in this collection are part of Balzac's influential series "The Human Comedy," in which he gives a fascinating account of French life in the years after the 1815 fall of Napoleon.
