A FAMILIAR EPISTLE TO ROBERT J. WALKER, Formerly of Pennsylvania, Later of Mississippi, More Recently of Washington, and Last Heard of in Mr. Coxwell's Balloon. From an Old Acquaintance. To Which is Prefixed a Biographical Sketch

London: Saunders, Otley, and Co., 1863. xiii, [1], 57 pages. Original printed wraps bound into red library cloth with gilt spine title and gilt call number on front cover. [21 cm.] Ex-Sondley Reference Library with bookplate on front pastedown, embossed stamp on title and one other leaf, and small number stamp on verso of title and in margin of one other page. Else very good. A few tiny traces of foxing, but interior is generally clean and bright. Later printing, issued within a few months of the first. Stated as the "tenth thousand." I have also seen references to issues stated as the "fifth thousand" and "seventh thousand." The "letter" is dated Oct. 30, 1863. George McHenry was a pro-Confederate Pennsylvanian, who moved to England at the outbreak of the Civil War. He formerly served as a director of the Philadelphia Board of Trade. He promoted the Southern cause in the Britain and published a book, "The Cotton Trade: Its Bearing upon the Prosperity of Great Britain and Commerce of the American Republics, Considered in Connection with the System of Negro Slavery in the Confederate States" (1863). He here criticizes Robert J. Walker, who defended slavery and Texas annexation as a U.S. Senator from Mississippi, but sided with the Union and represented Northern financial interests in Europe during the war. Walker flew with celebrated English balloonist, Henry Tracey Coxwell, on October 9, 1863. Sabin 43305 (citing the "tenth thousand" issue).
