About This Item

Chiswick Press. London 1926.. Boards insect-scarred. some few annotations. illustrations and charts in good order. spine in poor condition with breaks in rear joint and loss to top. rear board hinge. Poor condition and unattractive, a reference copy only.. Gilt on red cloth boards. 100pp illustrated 4to with two folding genealogy charts in rear pocket. George Luck Galpin (1857-1941) was the fifth of six sons of Henry Carter Galpin (b. 1820) who came to South Africa in 1848, moving to Grahamstown the next year to set up business as a watchmaker and jeweller. His house, in Bathurst Street, with its camera obscura, is presently a museum. George Luck Galpin was schooled at St Andrews in Grahamstown. He then went to England where he qualified first as a dentist and then as a surgeon. Returning to South Africa he practised as a surgeon (F.R.C.S.) in Port Elizabeth from 1885 to 1912. This work records in detail the early family history in England up to Henry Carter Galpin, and is replete with illustrations, detailed notes, arms. etc.
