A very bright, clean copy. Original dustwrapper with one small chip and a couple of small closed tears, otherwise a better than very good example. Overall a very good copy.

A great deal of information widely scattered throughout books and scientific journals in several languages is herein gathered together for the first time; the comparatively rich British Museum material is brought under review; illustrations of many original types, mostly hitherto unfigured, are provided; and comments furnished upon those original descriptions which seem inadequate or even inaccurate. Springfield: State Journal Steam Press, 1866. Hardcover. Small 4to. Modern green buckram. xvi, 504pp, iii. Frontispiece, Fine/very good. Modern binding is superb, clean and handsome; text block is clean and only ever-so-slightly age toned, with bit of soiling to preliminary leaves; there is the occasional spot of foxing, but the majority of the text block is as bright as the day it was published. A tight and unusually attractive first edition of this early study, the first of eight volumes published under Worthen's direction, with assistance from J.D. Whitney, Leo Lesquereux and Henry Engelmann. All called for foldout maps and plans (some partly colored) are present and mainly in superb condition, with only the two largest of them showing some edgewear and bearing expert archival strengthening. Worthen was a renowned if self-taught leading geographer of his day, and served as State Geologist from 1858 to 1875. All in all an exceptional, far above average copy.

Binding typically slightly soiled, else internally fine. A tight and attractive first edition. Limited to 160 copies. Wilkins studies the many genealogical tables used by Boccaccio in both manuscript and early printed versions of his "Genealogia deorum gentilium," a mythological encyclopedia. All captioned tissue guards present and pristine. A superb copy, with the original Caxton Club prospectus laid in.

First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing.
