Rahway, N. J.: The Mershon Company Book. Good. Hardback. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardback bound in brown cloth-covered boards with white titles and decorations on the cover and a colored paste-on on the front. Book has light edge wear with soiled closed page edges and age toned pages. No date stated, but research indicates a printing between 1902 when the New Jersey location appears on the title page under the company name and 1906 when the company was purchased by another publisher. A turn of the century novel set in Massachusetts. 320 pages. Holmes wrote 39 novels during her lifetime. Her popularity in the late 1800's was second only to Harriet Beecher Stowe. Portraying domestic life in small-town and rural settings, she examined gender relationships, as well as those of class and race. She also dealt with slavery and the American Civil War with a strong sense of moral justice. 320 pages.
