About This Item
Beijing: Zhili Bookstore, 1923. Facsimile after the 1784 edition, two volumes in 13 juan plus 1 addendum; text in Chinese; stab stitched drab paper wrappers; cover labels partially perished, a couple leaves split at fore-edge, manuscript annotations on upper covers, string snapped but binding holding soundly, good. The Fangyan, compiled by Yang Xiong in the Han Dynasty around the first century BCE, was "the first dialect dictionary in the history of Chinese lexicography and is thought to be the first of its kind in the history of world lexicography." (Yong and Peng, Chinese lexicography). It served as an important source for the reconstruction of the Chinese topolects spoken at the time. This edition is after the annotated edition by the scholar Guo Pu, who was the first to annotate the Fangyan in the 4th century CE.
