About This Item
Bern: Verlag Hans Huber, 1951. First edition, Publisher's bluee cloth clamshell case with gilt cover lettering containing the following: The title above. Octavo. 157, [1] pp. plus tow trail tests with the colors laid down; 16 completed tests (with the colored squares attached to the printed pyramids: all done by a 9 year old Etty Teller, age 9); many blank test forms, hundreds of little colored squares; and a large number of blank test scoring sheets. The clamshell case has a small split along the side (not affecting integrity), there is some underlining in the first part of the accompanying book no doubt by the previous owner-Dr. Arthur Teller of Geneva (surely Etty Teller was his daughter and he likely practised on her). Overall, very good. The Color Pyramid Test is a projective personality measure. It was developed by the Swiss psychologist Max Pfister, who used the test to reveal deviant personality characteristics. he test consists of a black and white squared pyramid chart. The subject is asked to choose twenty four small squares of different shades and tones of red, green, blue, purple, yellow, orange, brown, black, white and grey and to place them on the pyramid. Six different charts are requested using different instructions each time eg “as ugly as you can” or “pretty as you can” or “any way you please." Pfister saw that some people randomly scattered the colored squares while others formed designs and patterns and he called the former 'color dominated' and the latter 'form dominated'. Investigating the link between the colors people chose and personality characteristics he concluded that certain color preferences were indicative of particular traits: normal people favor the primary colors of red, yellow and blue disturbed people favored green, purple, white, gray and brown. A description of the Color Pyramid Test (Farbpyramidentest), basically a nonverbal technique for personality assessment, and its interpretive rationale which has received much attention in the German psychological literature but is almost unknown in this country. Review of the research literature suggests that: the CPT is about as reliable as most of the personality inventories in current use; it is easy to administer and is applicable over a wide range of ages, educational and cultural backgrounds; it is useful for the gross differentiation of groups with deviant personality characteristics and for obtaining information on the control of affect and other behavior traits in individual Ss. Although some of the reported studies lack adequate experimental controls and statistical treatment the CPT promises to be a useful tool for research and clinical personality assessment. (56 ref.)
