About This Item

No. 1 St. James's St. London: W. Sams, 1824. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. QUIZ Peter [ie EGERTON Daniel Thomas]. A Satire on The high and low life in Town and Country. Hand coloured engraved title page and twelve plates, all hand coloured aquatints, some numbered, 4to, bound by Riviere in nineteenth century calf, gilt edge tooling, edges & corners rubbed, spine raised bands, gilt tooling & titles, edges worn, gilt tooling to board edges & turn-ins, blue marbled boards, binders & dealers stamp to verso fep, t.e.g, First issue, with prepublication watermarks of 1822, a remarkable suite of English Regency colour plates satirizing the high and low life in Town and Country. Tooley 203 mentions an unnumbered plate (Knocked Senseless by Knight of the Whip) not present here, or in the Abbey copy (in original wrappers), or in any copy listed. The original wrappers call for Twelve Plates and therefore the plate in question, which was published by W. Egerton, is certainly not required in the above work. (375*274 mm), (Abbey Life 286. Colas 937. Tooley 203 almost similar!).
