About This Item
New York, NY: Putnam. Hardcover. Very Good. PUtnam, n.d. (circa 1890). 16mo, full decorated red leather. Flexible boards, as in the style of turn of the century gift books. Father Tom is a classic piece of Irish humor, sometimes acclaimed as one of the high spots of nineteenth-century comic writing. It was first published in Blackwood's Magazine for May 1838, and many times reprinted well into the 20th century. The piece has been called "exuberant", and was admired by Yeats before he knew Ferguson to be the author. "The piece survived on the strength of its comic spirit, but it was written with an urgent reference to contemporary affairs in Dublin. The 'Father Tom' of the title is a caricature of Father Thomas Maguire (1792-1849), parish priest of Ballinamore in Leitrim and 'modern Hercules of dogmatical controversy.
