About This Item
New York, Heritage Press 1941, 1941. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. Fritz Eichenberg. Quarto, hardcover, hinges starting else VG in red boards with gilt design on cover and spine in lightly worn gold slipcase. Publisher's "Sandglass" laid in 235 pp Translated from the Russian by Constance Garnett with a preface by John T. Winterich and illustrated with wood engravings by Eichenberg. After Hitler came to power, at the height of the Great Depression, Eichenberg came to the United States where he taught at the New School of Social Research, worked for the Federal Art Project, did political cartoons for the Nation, and illustrated children's books. He is now a noted illustrator, especially famous for his illustrations of classics of Russian literature. The Limited Editions Club was started and operated by George Macy from 1929 to 1971 and produced one book a month, usually limited to 1500 numbered copies. The books were printed by the finest printing companies in various countries, in unusually fine bindings and papers, with beautifully decorated slipcases, illustrated by a well-known illustrator, sometimes hand-colored, sometimes with original etchings, and usually signed by the illustrator. These books are highly collectible and good investments. Heritage Press is known for its attractive and affordable rerprints of special editions previously produced by the Limited Editions Club
