One of the bright lights of his generation of Italian writers, the Jesuit Giambattista Roberti first conceived this collection of "Aesopian" verse tales in the early 1770s, and published ever-increasing versions of it until it took its definitive form in 1782, published in the author's home town of Bassano by the great Remondini firm. Giuseppe Remondini writes in the preface to this volume that although there are several extant edtions, "none other can rival boast the breadth and the accuracy of mine, since it has been reviewed with careful diligence by the author himself, and enriched by him with fresh material.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
