About This Item

London: James Cawthorn, 1814. First Printing. Hardcover. Very good. Small 8vo, in early 20th century half dark red morocco and red cloth boards, very good copy with light wear, darkening and rubbing to binding, mild restoration to front outer joint, contents very good, half title page present but with some small spots and stains. Correction to "working" in Hunt's hand on last text page of book. Has last leaf of ads. Text uncut and untrimmed. With the author's manuscript correction to the last page of text, as often found. In the poem of the title Hunt, taking the part of Apollo sitting in judgment on various poets, is able to criticize freely. Of Scott he writes: "A great deal's endured where there's measure and rhyme: But prose such as your's is a pure waste of time." Hunt grew to regret the "inconsiderate and ... unwarranted levity" with which the poem was written, and he himself was to become the victim of similar attacks. However many critics, including Gosse, consider this to be the best of his poetical works. Brewer p.54.
