It is a story about a young woman who looks back to the world of her immigrant parents: a Chinese-Panamanian father and a German mother who meet in postwar Germany and settle in New York. She grows up in a jousing project in the 1950s and 1960s, escaping into dreams inspired by her parent's stories and her own reading. Years later while she is working as an English instructor and becomes involved with a Russian immigrant. As his English improves, she is drawn to him while at the same time she is frightened by his revelations about his own difficult past. The author is a winner of two Pushcart Prizes, a General Electric Foundation Award for Young Writers, a Whiting Writer's Award for her short fiction, two American Academy of Arts and Letters Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Awards, and the Rome Prize in Literature.
