In the 10,000 Boers left the safety of the Cape Colony into the unknown of deepest Africa intending to settle and farm in the interior. They were the first to attempt this, and buried many of their fellows along the way. They used a form of covered wagon, and hunted for their food. The new settlers were intent on getting out from under British rule, and obtaining religious freedom in a frontier lifestyle. A27.
