Paul served in the US Army in France during WW I, where he fought in the Battle of Saint-Michel and in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. After the war he returned home to work as a journalist. He began writing books, partly inspired by his military experience. By 1925 he left to join some of his literary peers such as James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein in the Montparnasse Quarter of Paris. Paul was writing for the Paris Herald and novels in his spare time when he had a nervous breakdown and left for Spain. Caught in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, he was inspired to write, "Life and Death of a Spanish Town". Paul would go back to Paris to write his famous work, "The Last Time I Saw Paris". Back in the United States during the outbreak of WWII, Elliot Paul would turn to screenwriting, working on, "Rhapsody in Blue", "New Orleans" featuring Billie Holliday, and "London Town".
