From dj: "The picture of English and Continental society which Mr. Benson fives is glowing and varied. His talent as a novelist and as a biographer brought him into contact with people from all walks of life, and he is equally effective when he describes a duchess and a gardener, an author and an English society woman. His pages abound with stories of such famous aquaintances as Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Marie Corelli, George Eliot, Mrs. Humphrey Ward, and many others."
