About This Item

SITWELL, Sacheverell, BUCHANAN, Handasyde, and FISHER, James. Fine Bird Books, 1700-1900. Elephant folio. Colored illus. Original cloth, dust jacket. London and New York: Collins & Van Nostrand, 1953. First edition. Limited to 2,000 copies. Very good. An entertaining and informative guide to the best bird books of Europe and America, useful for those looking to go beyond Audubon. Sitwell (1897-1988) drew on his deep knowledge of fine books, birding, and artistic technique for a narrative essay that guides the uninitiated through the highs and lows of two centuries of bird art, while the bibliography provided by Buchanan (an expert on natural history books and the longtime manager of the Heywood Hill bookstore in London) and Fisher (1912-1970; an editor, BBC broadcaster, and ornithologist) offers the details needed by specialists. Illustrated throughout with examples from the books discussed, this oversized volume is itself a fine bird book.
