Boston: American Stationers' Company. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. 1838. 1st Edition. First Printing. Leather. Uniformly half bound in brown morocco over marbled boards (by MacDonald - N.Y.), spines in six compartments separated by raised bands, gilt lettering in two compartments, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. Illustrated with tissue-protected frontispieces, portraits, maps, facsimiles, and family trees. Original cloth spine bound in at the end of each volume. The works included are: (1) History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic (three volumes, 1st edition, Boston: American Stationers' Company, 1838); (2) The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles the Fifth by William Robertson, with an Account of the Emperor's Life After his Abdication by William H. Prescott (three volumes, 1st edition, Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1857); (3) History of the Conquest of Mexico, with a Preliminary View of the Ancient Mexican Civilization, and the Life of the Conqueror, Hernando Cortes (three volumes, 1st edition, New York: Harper and Brothers, 1843); (4) History of the Reign of Philip the Second, King of Spain (three volumes, 1st edition, Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1855); (5) History of the Conquest of Peru (two volumes, 2nd edition, New York: Harper and Brothers, 1848); and (6) Biographical and Critical Miscellanies (one volume, 1st edition, New York: Harper and Brothers, 1845). . All of the volumes are unmarked (aside from a former owner's signature on the title pages), tight, square, and clean. A few of the volumes have some very slight brusing on the spines, mild foxing throughout. All of the hinges are strong, and the leather is supple and soft. A very handsome set.
