About This Item

The Folio Society, 1986. Hardcover. Near Fine. In a very good slipcase which shows light wear. This is the First Printing of the Folio version of this material. Richard Hakluyt and John White were remarkable Elizabethans.and this book is based on their original work. Hakluyt was a young scholar at Oxford when the discovery of the New World revolutionized Renaissance geography. He introduced that revolution in England and , indeed, was a leader of it. He used available documents, good access to the principals in England, interviews with captains and sailors, and use of their diaries, logs, maps and records to write the accounts of their voyages to the New World which are the heart of this book. White made remarkable drawings, watercolours, and maps on his trips to Virginia and they are reproduced beautifully here. Together, Hakluyt's contemporary text and White's original art and cartography make this a spectacular publication. Introduction by A. L. Rowse. The book is in Near Fine condition.
