The main text of the book written by Boris Pilnyak (1894-1938), who traveled to Japan twice, in 1926 and in 1932.
Pilnyak was one of the most bestselling Russian modern authors of that times despite a lot of his text critized by authorities. This novel condemned in Pravda newspaper for sympathy to Japanese imperialism. Japanese suspected Pilniak in espionage and Soviets executed him in 1937 as a Japanese spy.
The Pilniak's essay one of the the important texts on Japan written by an european writer in 20th century.
The second part of the book is formally just glosses to the main part. The author Koryo-saram Roman Kim (1899-1967), important Russian intelligence agent.
The one of his glosses in this book is one of the earliest foreign mentioning of Ninja and the ninja culture, and it was the first mentioning of ninja in Russia.
The book was banned unless 1957 and all copies ought to be destoyed or put to libraries' spetskhran.
Rare especially in good condition.
