About This Item
Chicago: John Carbutt, 1869. Original stereoview by Chicago photographer John Carbutt (1832-1905). Born In England, Carbutt moved to Chicago in 1853 and operated a photography business there until moving to Philadelphia circa 1870. The stereoview offered here depicts the First National Bank of Chicago circa 1869. The building was built in 1868 and was supposed to be fireproof. Mrs. O'Leary's cow may have thought differently: the buiding was substantially damaged in the Great Fire of 1871. When it was rebuilt, the design was very similar, but there were only 4 stories rather than the 5 shown in the stereoview. The stereoview is in very good condition: clean and bright, with minimal fading of the images and a small stain limited to the edge of the mount.. Original. Stereoview. Very Good. Illus. by John Carbutt. 3 1/2' by 7". Photo.
