About This Item

Worcester, Massachusetts: Published by G. R. Peckham / Tyler & Seagrave, Printers, 1870. Hardcover. Good. First edition. Small square quarto. Approximately 6" x 7". [100]pp. A volume of 504 portraits on 56 mounted albumen photographs, nine to a page. Re-spined in quarter cloth with original leather boards titled in gilt, and later paper title label on the spine. Considerable erosion on the boards, small chip on the front fly, a good copy. Claflin (1817-1897) was a photographer who operated several studios around Worcester from the 1850's to the 1890's. Black was a prominent Boston photographer best-known for his famous portraits of John Brown taken the same year as the raid on Harper Ferry and his 1860 photograph of Boston taken from a balloon, which was the first aerial photograph taken in American. A nice collection of images.
