This is a photocopy of the doctoral dissertation that Marshall Ganz submitted for his degree in Sociology at Harvard University. t A near fine copy in plastic comb binding Ganz was a longtime lieutenant to farm labor leader Cesar Chavez and helped to bring unionization to farmworkers in the United. The dissertation was basis for book Ganz later published title: Why David Sometimes Wins: Leadership, Organization, and Strategy in the California Farm Worker Movement. Included is a letter from Ganz to the late Dick Mister, a longtime labor union reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle and other Northern California media outlets.
