About This Item

London: Printed for T. Cadell and W. Davis, Strand [et al.], 1813. Hardcover. Very Good. Five volumes. Seventh edition (*The Works*, vols. 1-4); second edition (*Reliques*, bound as "vol. V" on spine). Octavos. Vol. 1 illustrated with an engraved frontispiece plate. All four volumes of *The Works* with half titles present. Uniformly bound in contemporary polished calf, both covers with decorative borders tooled in blind and gold, gilt spine, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled. All five volumes are inscribed in ink on the front fly leaves by James Smith, an agricultural engineer from Deanston, Scotland (dated 1828). Modest darkening to the spine backs and rubbing to the edges of the boards, toning and some light scattered foxing, very good. An attractive set in polished calf with skillful hand tooling. The uniform binding for the set was likely commissioned by James Smith (1789-1850) and presented to a friend from the nearby village of Doune.
