Octavo, 286pp. Red cloth, title in silver on spine. First edition statement on copyright page, with no additional printings mentioned. Solid text block, appears unread. In the publisher's near fine dust jacket, retail price on front flap, faint sunning to spine, bright illustrations. George MacDonald Fraser (1925-2008) based the idea of Flashman on the original character created by Thomas Hughes in Tom Brown's School Days, published in 1857. The Flashman character was a fictionalized look at the 19th century British Army, but Fraser was always praised for his historical accuracy in portraying real world events. By the time of his death in 2008, Fraser published twelve Flashman novels, including: Flashman (1969), Royal Flash (1970), Flash for Freedom! (1971), Flashman at the Charge (1973), Flashman in the Great Game (1975), Flashman's Lady (1977), Flashman and the Redskins (1982), Flashman and the Dragon (1985), Flashman and the Mountain of Light (1990), Flashman and the Angel of the Lord (1994), Flashman and the Tiger (1999) and Flashman on the March (2005).
Synopsis
Celebrated Victorian bounder, cad, and lecher, Sir Harry Flashman, V. C. , returns to play his (reluctant) part in the charge of the Light Brigade in the fourth volume of the critically acclaimed Flashman Papers. As the British cavalry prepared to launch themselves against the Russian guns at Balaclava, Harry Flashman was petrified. But the Crimea was only the beginning: beyond lay the snowbound wastes of the great Russian slave empire, torture and death, headlong escapes from relentless enemies, savage tribal hordes to the right of him, passionate females to the left of him... And finally that unknown but desperate war on the roof of the world, when India was the prize, and there was nothing to stop the armed might of Imperial Russia but the wavering sabre and terrified ingenuity of old Flashy himself.
