Anne Parrish (1888 – 1957) was born into a family of artist – her father was Thomas Clarkson Parrish an etcher from Philadelphia, her mother (Anne Lodge) studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, her younger brother was also illustrator-writer Dillwyn Parrish and her distant cousin was the famous painter Maxfield Parrish - and she herself went on to be a novelist and writer of children's book. She was a runner-up for the Newbery Medal three times from 1925 to 1951. Her first book was published in 1923 and her last in 1951 leaving a rich portfolio of twenty books over her lifetime.

Description:
Harper & Brothers. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1930. 5th Edition. Hardcover. Pink cloth boards lightly rubbed, faded with loss at tips, spine just slightly slanted. Tightly bound, decorated endpapers. Early printing of this 1931 Newbery Honor book with twelve full page plates plus two-page color map of island. With elements of racial stereotypes, this title tells the story of a dollhouse and its inhabitants lost at sea who eventually end up on an island. "Dinah the Cook was jointed, but her head wouldn't turn. She was made of wood, painted black, with big whites to her eyes, and a red mouth as round as a berry." Dinah is also envious of Mrs. Doll's yellow hair, but in due course she admits that "I'm ashamed of wearing Mrs. Doll's wig. I always wanted to, but I haven't really enjoyed it. It just makes me feel blacker." ; MCF04431; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 265 pp .
