About This Item

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1906. Hardcover. NEAR FINE. Smith, E. Boyd. Previous owner's name to FFEP. Corners lightly bumped, slight rubbing to corners and spine caps. Tiny tears to worn and folded under spine caps. Mild shelfwear with a slight and gentle 4" line impression across rear board. A 0.5" closed tear to bottom of page 5 and some light wear continuing to page 11, as if pages were once stuck together then later pulled apart. Occasional light and tiny stains to some pages. Top edge gilt. Black and white illustrations throughout text and to start of each chapter. Gilt debossed lettering and head of ram to spine. White and cream illustration of sheep within fancy gilt debossed frame, gilt lettering to front board, army green cloth-covered boards. 266 pp. Clean, tight. Lovely! A champion of the local shepherds of California in the early twentieth-century, Austin blends natural history and politics. "The best days of shepherding in California were before the Frenchmen [Basques] began to appear on the mesas. Owners then had, by occupancy, the right to certain range, rights respected by their neighbors. Then suddenly the land was overrun by little dark men who fed where the feed was, kept to their own kind, turned money quickly, and went back to France to spend it." (text).
