About This Item

London: W. Robinson, 1903. Three large (9 3/4" x 12 3/4") uniform volumes bound in maroon cloth with horizontal gilt rules and gilt lettering on spine. Spines slightly faded, light spotting of the top edge of pages, board edges lightly rubbed, spine ends pushed in, but not frayed, and tips of boards slightly pushed in as well. A monthly review bound up for each of years 1903, 1904, and 1905. Each volume has its own title page and preface that were not part of the monthly magazines; the original covers of the monthly magazine are not bound in. Articles by various writers on different species of plants and trees. The magazine started in April 1903 and ran through December 1905, thus Volume 1 includes nine months, the other two volumes twelve months each. Each month has two colour plates (thus 66 in total, all present) with tissue guards. These are fine colour lithographs (not chromolithographs) which the editor refers to as "smudge lithographs". They are printed on heavy lightly-coated paper with some shine. Some of the plates are foxed, the adjacent tissue guards even more so, but many are clear of foxing and display brilliantly. The text is printed on heavy paper with any foxing strictly limited to the very edges of the leaves. There are also many detailed wood engravings printed with the text, some full page size. Volume 1 has 324 pages and weighs 2.9 kg,; Volume 2 has 392 pages and weighs 3.3 kg; Volume 3 has 360 pages and weighs 3.0 kg. Each volume has its own index bound in at the rear. A very nice complete set. The weight will require additional postage depending on destination.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket.
