Frederick the youngest son of John and Dinah (Peake) Edgcombe was christened September 22 1766. His father was a shipwright employed in Plymouth Dockyard. He boarded the HMS Formidable in 1782 at 15, then signed up to join the Assistance with 50 guns. .
