Profiles of people whose paths crossed with that of journalist Mike Thoele's (1941 -) during the fours years on the road to better know fellow Oregonians on behalf of the Register-Guard daily newspaper of Eugne. The cover features a photograph of Dan Deuel, the Birdman of Bandon, with his one-winged hawk. Likewise wounded with body no longer whole, ex-Californian and Vietnam vet Deuel wears his wounds "like a tree. Those are my growth rings", and devotes his life to animals in need; his story is on page 65.
