About This Item
North Melbourne: National Archives of Australia / Public Record Office Victoria, 2008. Paperback octavo (with full-flaps), very good condition, map, family tree, copies of certificates, black & white text-photos, colour plates, documents, top corner front cover bumped, tiny scuff top spine, minor edgewear. 132 pp. This is the story of Lucy and Percy Pepper, from Gippsland, Victoria, and how their lives were affected by laws and government policies that defined who was 'Aboriginal' and who was not. This book looks at their struggle to keep their extended family together, fight for Australia in World War 1, make good on a soldier settlement block, and survive ill health and poverty. Their story is told through correspondence between Percy and Lucy Pepper and government officials and Aboriginal administrators. The letters are now in the collections of the National Archives of Australia and the Public Record Office Victoria. This book is a valuable resource for Aboriginal people who want to find archival records. As well, anyone interested in early 20th-century Victoria can gain insights into the effects of past legislation and practices on individuals and families. (This copy: Paperback octavo.).
