About This Item
New York: Universe Books, 1978. Hardcover. Foreword by Jacques Cousteau. 8vo. Green cloth, price-clipped dust jacket. x, 277pp. Near fine/very good. Jacket a bit rubbed and edgeworn. Tight and attractive first edition, inscribed boldly on the front flyleaf by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author: "To / Mary Mack / With best wishes / Robert Cahn" -- and below this his wife adds "and / Pat Cahn." And below this is a nifty nonauthorial gift inscription by Newell B. Mack, an MIT researcher whose "somewhat far-out institutional solution" to an environmental issue is discussed in this book on pages 221-23. Mack presents this volume to his mother: "For Mom / Whose interest in the / past contributed to some / comments on the future (pp. 221 ff). / Newell / Dec. 25, 1978." Unusual copy.
