London: Jonathan Cape, 1987. First Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 1987 FIRST PRINTING of First UK Edition -- WINNER of the 1987 Boardman-Tasker Award for mountain literature. Original navy boards with gilt lettering spine. Inscribed and SIGNED by team member Gareth Wood on the title page. Wood was the third member of the expedition and reached the South Pole alongside Swan and Mear. WITH commemorative, illustrated envelope SIGNED by Roger Mear and SIGNED by Robert Swan (the Gareth Wood signature on the envelope is a stamped signature; Mear's and Swan's signatures are hand-signed). The book is in fine condition with clean covers, no rubbing, tight binding, no owner writing or marks on any pages (other than Wood's signed inscription), no foxing. The original dust jacket is clean and bright, no fading, no rubbing, no tears, no chips, complete with publisher's printed price on front flap corner still present. The signed commemorative envelope is in fine condition. It has a 50c Ross Dependency postage stamp canceled at Scott Base Antarctica on 9 November 1985 meaning it was very likely signed by Mear and Swan during the expedition. The book measures 254mm tall x 165mm, and has 306 pages, 96 color & 11 b/w photos, EP map, 2 maps + EP map, 5 appendices, index.. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
