About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1899. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 2 vol. 8vo. [6], vii-xv, [3], 1-307, [5] pp.; [2], iii-xi, [3], 1-255, [3] pp. Bound in green cloth with decorations in blue, black, and gilt on the front boards, spines are titled with black lettering and gilt, top edges gilt. Illustrated with a frontispiece in each volume (one frontispiece in color), seven colored plates, one photogravure, fifty-four plates, dozens of in-text illustrations, and a fold-out map. With the government enquiry and report and other official documents by J. Larkin Esq., deputed by the government of India. A nice set of Landor's recounting of his trip to Tibet, and his subsequent capture, torture, and escape from the forbidden land. Landor includes a sort-of ethnography of the people in Tibet that he encountered: his illustrations record traditional dress for female Tibetans, religious traditions of Tibet, food, and other scenes from Tibetan life. Each volume shows a small separation between the backstrip and the textblock, volume two with a bit of chipping to its spine.
