[7.75x5.25in]; Brown cloth covers with dark brown lettering on spine and front, all edges trimmed; [10], 440 pp., frontispiece and three illustrations by E. Boyd Smith; Minor edge wear and bumped corners, old tape offsets on front and rear endpapers, small chips at bottom of illustrations list and following page, no loss of text, small stain bottom of page 5;. Mary Hunter Austin (1868-1934) was a western writer with settings in California and New Mexico. She is best known for her works on the California desert landscape in The Land of Little Rain (19030) and other writings on Native American culture, literature and mysticism. She was also active in the California artist community of Carmel and Greenwich Village.
