Paris: A la Librairie Illustrée [c. 1887 - 1907 ], 1887. Wraps. See Description. 8vo. pp. [4], 308. Bound in original color illustrated publisher’s wraps depicting a man hypnotizing a woman. The same image is present in black and white on the title page. Head and tail caps are professionally repaired. The wraps show wear to the extremities as well as some age-toning, soiling, spotting, mild edge chipping etc. The text block is loosely sewn with a single stitch through each gathering. Interior pages contain periodic spots of marginal foxing. A few minor marginal tears are neatly sealed. The upper edge of page 69 is chipped (1 x 0.5 cm). According to Crabtree this work is "a critical evaluation of the nature of hypnotism and somnambulism. The author sees imagination as the central element," (Crabtree, p. 276). Crowley's most famous work. This is the Castle Books 1991 reprint. Exceptionally good condition for this edition. No spine fade at all, which is often seen. DJ is complete with no tears, cracks, fading or marks. Only the slightest rubbing on the back. See all photos. Pages are uncut, bright, clean and with no obvious markings at all. No inscriptions, bookplates etc. Boards are tight and clean. This book has been exceptionally well looked after and but for the very slightest of signs is effectively as new. Hardcover bound in light tan quarter cloth with brown paper-covered boards and housed in a red dust jacket which may or may not be original to the book. (The jacket does not have the book's title but states "...with best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" from Nicholson's Book Shop in Richmond, Indiana). The jacket is heavily damped and worn. This has minimal effect on the binding, but there is a bit of damping on the lower corner of the first few pages, and there is heavy red damping in the rear flyleaf. The book is sound and is clean within. Scarce.
