First U.S. edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Post-Cromwellian English adventure and romance. Rafael Sabatini (1875-1950) is today best known for his novel Captain Blood. His Italian father and English mother were both well-known opera singers, and Sabatini took up writing after a brief stint in the business world.
Fortune's Fool chronicles the adventures of Randal Holles in 1665. A former soldier in Cromwell's Republican army who is down on his luck and threatened with execution, Holles is commissioned to abduct a famous actress. The plot twists and turns as is Sabatini's norm, with plenty of adventure and swashbuckling for all.
