Illustrated throughout with line drawings and many black-and-white photos , and twelve maps. Bibliography, index. Bound in full green cloth with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Cloth slightly flawed on front cove (see photo). Discreet gift inscription on front pastedown, dated 1931. Small bookseller tag on rear pastedown (J. W. Robinson, Seventh and Grand, Los Angeles). With the illustrated dust jacket featuring a wrap-around overland map. Dust jacket with slight, shallow chips, else bright and presentable. The extensive bibliography speaks to Hulbert's mastery of his subject matter, by which he seamlessly blends first-person accounts, from diaries and letters, the quest for California gold. Hulbert writes, "nothing is modern in this book except the arrangement." WHEAT (Gold Rush), 107. Dust jacket is now protected in a removable clear, archival sleeve.
